The many national and state parks offer a variety of sights and services...hiking ..fishing..camping.. They are an excellent place to start an outdoor adventure..use as a homebase for camping and sightseeing...or have an afternoon picnic with family and friends!! The National Park Reservation Service offers a convienient way to check availability and make reservations!
The Green Mountain National Forest is located in western Vermont, and divided into the northern and southern sections. Hiking may be done along either the Appalachian Trail passing throuth the southern section, or on Long Trail, which traverses both areas. There are numerous areas to camp throughout the area, many with RV hookups. A very scenic area of New England, with covered bridges, historic memorabilia and exhibits, and excellent fishing in the lakes and streams.
The Camels Hump State Park is located just south of Rt 89 near Waterbury. Appropriatly named, Camels Hump Mountain rises 4083 feet on part of Long Trail. The Winooski River passes through Bolton on the northern side of the park, and the Huntington River on the western side may be accessed from Rt 2. Visit this scenic area, and take a quiet walk among some of the finest views New England has!
The Mount Mansfield State Forest is home to Mt Mansfield, the highest point in Vermont at 4393 ft, and offers hiking along a section of Long Trail. The summit may be reached by road or by riding on a gondola. It is Vermont's largest state forest at more than 34000 acres, and one of the states favorite recreation areas. Stowe, Duxbury, and Cambridge are towns in the area. There is camping available at the Little River area and the Underhill area. Swimming and boating are available at the Little River area.
Underhill State Park is located within Mount Mansfield State Forest at the headwaters of Brown's River at Mount Mansfield. The park offers easy access to trout waters, hiking, and camping, with 30+ sites. Cross country skiing is allowed, although all facilities are closed in the winter. Nearby are the towering 1000 foot cliffs of Smuggler's Notch, Cantilever Rock wedged in a cliff, and Mount Mansfield Natural Area.
