Block Island is situated ten miles off the coast in the Atlantic Ocean, and is a famous vacation retreat. Reachable by ferry, the island offers quiet beaches, surf fishing, and lots of quiet relaxation. There are two light houses, theSoutheast, and the North Light. Newport was thrust into the limelight in the nineteenth century when a notable set of New York millionaires decided to make this town their summer playground, vacating their Fifth Avenue mansions. Estates were built with fortunes amassed from railroad, banking and industrial money, along the towering cliffs that provide astonishing views. Providence is an historical town, with many of the buildings remaining undisturbed since the early 18th century. It is the home of the oldest Baptist congregation, founded in 1639. The largest bell cast by Paul Revere's foundry hangs in the First Unitarian church. Initially founded as an agricultural community, the city held an important role as a port with shipbuilding yards, and then became an important manufacturing and industrial center. The Southest Light House on Block Island is situated on Mohegan Bluffs. The bluffs rise about 200 feet above the ocean, and extend for almost three mile along the southern shore. The light house, built in 1875, was visited by presient Grant and Clinton, and has one of the most powerful electric beacons on the eastern seaboard. Nature programs are offer along the bluffs.
