NATIONAL PARKS..OUR OUTDOOR HERITAGE..NATURE AT IT'S BEST..RHODE ISLAND
The many national and state parks offer a variety of sights and services...hiking ..fishing..camping.. They are an excellent place to start an outdoor adventure..use as a homebase for camping and sightseeing...or have an afternoon picnic with family and friends!! The Rhode Island Welcome Center is located on Interstate 95 north from Connecticutbteween exits 2 and 3 in Richmond. The center is open year round except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. The National Park Reservation Service offers a convienient way to check availability and make reservations at federal parks!
The Backstone Valley Visitor Center is located at 175 Main Street in Pawtucket. The center is easily reached from Interstate 95, and features videos of the Blackstone Valley heritage in an authentic mill-atmosphere theater. The Center is open year round from 9 - 5 p.m. (401)724-2200
Arcadia State Park is located along Rhode Island Rt 165 near Escoheag, and borders Connecticut at Beach Pond. Swimming and fishing are available, and several streams pass through the park, connecting Boon Pond, Breakheart Pond, and several others to the Wood River.
Beavertail State Park, originally known as Fort Burnside, was aquired form the U.S. Navy. Located on the southern tip of Conanicut Island, the park draws many visitors due to its clean environment and relatively isolated location. A lighthouse and museum are maintained by the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association. View the siaboats and pleasure craft, get some fresh air, and relax! Access is south off RI Rt138, through Jamestown. A short drive will get you to Newport, to view some of the lavish estates built along the cliffs.
Colt State Park, located in Bristol RI, offers bicycling paths, hiking, jogging, salt water fishing, boating with a public boat ramp, an observation tower, snowmobiling, and naturalist programs. Situated on Narragansett Bay, panoramic views of passing boats offer a relaxing setting. The park is open year round, with 646 acres of fruit trees and flowering shrubs. The area is rich in history, with it's popular open air Chapel-By-The Sea, 10 large playing fields, and picnic groves with over 200 picnic tables.
Prudence Bay Island recreation area is located in the Narragansett Bay, across the East Passage from Mellville. Surf cast for "blues" and stripers in the bay, or relax on a quiet beach....
Misquamicut Beach, is often refered to as Rhode Island's most popular by residents both in and out of state. Nearby is Burlingame State Park, and Burlingame Campground. A new pavillion was erected in 1999, with coin operated hot showers, a concession building, and outdoor cold shower structures. Enjoy some of New Englands warmer waters and ocean breezes! Located on Rt 1A Misquamicut Beach can easily e reached from Interstate 95. Check for places to stay.
