The many national and state parks offer a variety of sights and services...hiking ..fishing..camping.. They are an excellent place to start an outdoor adventure..use as a homebase for camping and sightseeing...or have an afternoon picnic with family and friends!! The National Park Reservation Service offers a convienient way to check availability and make reservations!
Don't be a couch potato! Connecticut has over 100 state parks and forests called Public Recreation Areas, to provide recreational opportunities for the entire family. Activities range from camping, fishing,hiking, boating, snowmobiling, or just plain relaxing and enjoying some of the most beautiful scenery in New England!
Natchaug is a 12000 acre State Forest and James L. Goodwin State Forest at 2000 acres, are located in east central Connecticut along the Natchaug River. Bordered on the north (Natchaug) by Rt 44 at Pheonixville and on the south by Rt 6 at Clarks Corner, the two parks off a nice place to fish, swim, boat,take a hike, or just relax and picnic.
Located in eastern Connecticut on the Rhode Island border several trails meander through Pauchaug Stata Forest. A good place to start in is near the center of the park on Rt 165 near Voluntown, where you can hike north to Sterling Hill, south along Rt 49, west to Pachaug and Pachaug Pond or Hopeville Pond State Park, or out to Beach Pond on the eastern side. Part of Beach pond is in Rhode Island...Check fishing regulations!
Squantz Pond State Park- New Fairfield, is located on the west side of Candlewood Lake, off Rt 39 in New Fairfield. One of Connecticuts top bass fishing waters, the lake offers good shallow and deep water fishing. The 5000 acre lake has a lot of shoreline areas due to it's long narrow shape, and has several launch areas available.
Branching from the Air Line State Park Trail at Rt 66 near Willamantic, this trail winds approximately 15 miles to the northwest. This river can also be seen from a canoe or kayak, with an access point near Rt 6 at Rt 32. Remember to leave with everything you brought...to preserve the veiws available!
Mansfield Hollow Widlife Area has several trails winding through the forest, and Mansfield Hollow Dam which is maintained by the US Army Corp., provides a lake with fishing and boating. Pack a lunch, take a ride, and relax!
Mashamoquet Brook State Park offers camping, fishing, swimming and picnicking, and is located on Rt 44 outside Pomfret, CT. Trails lead through the park, and on leads to the "Wolf Den", where Isreal Putnum is said to have tracked down and killed the last wolf in Connecticut. Later, Putnam became one of the more famous generals in the American Revolution. The Airline State Park Trail is just north of the park.
Just over the Massachusetts border, Nipmuck State Forest is accessible from Rt 198 in Woodstock Connecticut. A trail winds through the forest along Breakneck Brook, and extends down through the Yale University Forest to Natchaug State Forest for those who are avid hikers! The trail is also accesible from Rt 171 where the Nipmuck and Yale Forests meet. Spend a relaxing day along the Breakneck or Lebanon Brook within the Forest.
